Supported Decision Making Service

This service is established with a practical purpose of assisting autistic individuals and their families in creation of individual’s own support team in regard to making practical decisions.

We are an Organizational Member of The Alliance for Citizen Directed Supports and we follow the principles outlined in the ASAN brief on  Supported Decision Making.  In a complex society as we are – each of us depends on the availability of affordable services in every sphere of life. Choosing the right services is important and often requires advise.

We espouse a philosophy that supported decision-making is a natural and gradual process that should begin in childhood in order to be fully effective; it is a gradual process that is oriented towards independence and minimization of areas of decision making that would need support.  In understanding that this is a complex and lengthy process we recommend to begin this process early – we assist families in this process via advisory an facilitation of interpersonal communication channels.

A part of our advisory is developing recommendations for setting up trusts [including when under guardianship] with provisions elevating individual’s independence. It implies creating a framework where certain provisions of the trust suggest gradual [age dependent] exposure to various aspects of decision-making, thus allowing easy transition to maintaining self-directed supports by the person at adulthood.

An example of this are Grandparent’s bypass trusts for grandchildren centered around livable real estate [such as grandparent’s house] where provisions of ‘supported decision making’ at large – are set to nurture friendship, promote independence, and derive income for all the grandchildren, with certain special guarantees for autistic member of the extended family. This may also be bolstered by trust ‘s participation in a pooled legal defense fund. This pool fund [with small allocations  from the trust] provides the necessary insurance to defend the interest of your child  if and as the need arises.  We advise and assist  families in both legal and societal aspects of these arrangements.

We also provide advice and assistance by helping you to connect to people in your area [volunteers and professional stewards when needed] who would assist you to set up the services you need without infringement of your freedom and comforts.
